What is a Canada Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA)?

A Canada Electronic Travel Authorisation, commonly called an eTA, is a digital travel approval required for certain travellers who are flying to or transiting through Canada. It is electronically linked to your passport and enables Canadian authorities to conduct pre-arrival screening before you board your flight.

An eTA is not a visa. It allows eligible travellers to visit Canada for short stays and applies only to air travel. It does not apply to entry by land or sea.

Who Needs a Canada eTA?

You need a Canada eTA if all of the following apply:

  • You are a citizen of a visa-exempt country

  • You are travelling to Canada by air or transiting through a Canadian airport

  • You are visiting temporarily for tourism, business, family visits, or similar short-term purposes

All travellers, including children and infants, must hold their own approved Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) before boarding a flight to Canada.

Who Does Not Need a Canada eTA?

You do not need a Canada eTA if you:

  • Are a Canadian citizen

  • Are a Canadian permanent resident

  • Hold a valid Canadian visa

  • Are a US citizen travelling on a US passport

  • Are entering Canada by land or sea, including by car, bus, train, or cruise ship

Dual Canadian citizens should travel with a valid Canadian passport.

Lawful permanent residents of the United States travelling to Canada by air do not need an eTA if they carry a valid passport from their country of nationality and valid proof of US permanent residence.

We can assist with your Canada eTA application, helping ensure your information is completed accurately so you can focus on planning your trip to Canada.

Canada eTA or Canada Visa: What Do You Need?

You need a Canada eTA if:

  • - You are from a visa-exempt country

  • - You are flying to or transiting through Canada

  • - Your visit is temporary (such as tourism, visiting family or friends, or short business travel)

You need a Canada Visitor Visa if:

  • - You are from a visa-required country and do not qualify for visa-exempt travel

  • - Your passport nationality requires a visa to enter Canada for a temporary visit

  • - You are travelling using a travel document that requires a visa under Canada’s entry rules

A Visitor Visa is only for temporary visits. It does not authorise work or long-term study. Separate permits or applications are required for those activities.

Special eTA eligibility for some visa-required nationals

Certain travellers from visa-required countries may apply for an eTA instead of a visitor visa for air travel only if they meet specific conditions, including:

  • Holding a valid US non-immigrant visa at the time of application, or

  • Having held a Canadian visitor visa within the past 10 years

If these conditions are not met, a visitor visa is required.

How Long Can You Stay in Canada with an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA)?

An approved eTA allows multiple visits to Canada for short stays, typically up to six months per visit.

The border services officer determines the final length of stay upon your arrival in Canada.

If you want to remain in Canada beyond your permitted stay, you must apply for an extension before your authorised period ends.

Health, Security, and Admissibility Requirements

To be approved for a Canada eTA, you must not be inadmissible to Canada.

Factors that may affect admissibility include:

  • Criminal history

  • Previous visa refusals or overstays

  • Security concerns

  • Public health or public safety risks

Some applications may require additional review, depending on the applicant’s personal history or travel background.

Proof of Onward Travel and Funds

When entering Canada as a visitor, you may be asked to provide:

  • Proof of onward or return travel

  • Evidence of sufficient funds to support your stay

These checks are typically conducted at the border, rather than during the eTA application process.

Documents Needed for a Canada eTA

In most cases, you only need:

  • A valid passport from an eligible country

  • A working email address

  • A debit or credit card to pay the application fee

No physical documents are required for the application process.

Applying for a Canada eTA

The Canada eTA application is completed online.

Passport details must be entered exactly as shown on your passport. Even minor errors can delay processing or result in the refusal of the application.

Canada eTA Processing Time

Many Canada eTA applications are approved within minutes.

Some applications require additional checks and may take several days or longer. Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit their application well in advance of their intended travel date.

Validity of a Canada eTA

A Canada eTA is usually valid for up to five years, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.

You may travel to Canada multiple times during the validity period, provided each visit meets temporary entry requirements.

If you are issued a new passport for any reason, you must apply for a new eTA.

Using a Canada eTA at the Border

Holding an approved eTA does not guarantee entry to Canada.

Border officers may assess:

  • Your purpose of travel

  • Intended length of stay

  • Travel history

  • Compliance with entry conditions

Border officials made the final decision on entry upon arrival.

Common Reasons for Canada eTA Refusal

A Canada eTA may be refused due to:

  • Incorrect or incomplete information

  • Criminal record or prior travel authorisation violations

  • Security or admissibility concerns

Providing accurate and honest information is essential.

Transiting Through Canada

Visa-exempt travellers transiting through Canada by air must hold a valid Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA), even if they do not leave the airport.
